Sculptural works in marble will always be of appeal simply due to the beauty of the medium. As a carver, the crystals within the marble hold a special magical song for the artist, and the knowledge that they are one-of-a-kind works always holds appeal. Samantha Meadmore only did one traditonal carving for a part of a work created in Carrara; the home of Michaelangelo. The town is steeped in tradion and the mountains of rapidly diminishing, white Carrara marble hold an attraction that spellbounds the whole, somewhat dust-covered town. The marble for these feet is a small block of Portuguese pink, imported on request for its beautiful, soft colour and relative softness. Even this small piece, uncarved, cost several thousand $A even ten years ago. Again, Samantha showed native ability to carve having never tried her hand at carving before. Now Samantha tends towrads the abstract and, finances permitting, likes to use the marble in its random shape to compliment the form of the glasswork and provide a weighted balast for support. |
